10 SONGS: 2/7/2026

10 Songs is a weekly list of ten songs that happen to be on my mind at the moment. The lists are usually dominated by songs played on the previous Sunday night's edition of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl. The idea was inspired by Don Valentine of the essential blog I Don't Hear A Single

SLYBOOTS: If We Could Let Go

Much of this week's show was programmed in anger, and in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Minneapolis. We opened with Slyboots' "If We Could Let Go," a gorgeous, life-affirming declaration of gaze fixed forward in the face of life's casual (and institutionalized) cruelty. It's become one of my favorite songs, and it was the only song I considered for this week's first spin. In September, I posted a Greatest Record Ever Made! appreciation of the track. As we kick off our own statement of dissent and resolution, I'm going to quote that piece in its entirety:

"If We Could Let Go." I'm trying. Honest, I'm trying.

Slyboots are a great, great group from New York, and they're deserving of much wider notoriety. Their 2024 single "If We Could Let Go" is heartbreaking in all the best ways, a song full of hope and ache, empowered with an awareness of how far we fall short in pursuit of peace, love, and understanding, and driven by determination to overcome that gap and collectively become the better people a burning world needs us to be. Not merely my favorite track from last year; it's a legit contender for my all-time Hot 100. 

The song's title offers a path forward in troubled times, even if it's a path I'm not sure I'm ready to take. Yet. As close to throwing a gauntlet as an earnest plea for peace can be, the songwriting for "If We Could Let Go" is credited to the group. Lead singer Tiffany Lyons imbues the lyrics with an implied weariness bolstered by strength of passion and clarity of purpose. Guitarist KG Noble, bassist Margaret LaBombard, drummer Ted Marcus, and keyboardist Gregorio Lozano surround Lyons with bounce and determination, a steel-willed grace battalion buoyed by angelic backing vocals courtesy of Noble and Lozano.

As we sing along, and as we ponder the salvation in letting go of prejudice and distrust, there are things we should not relinquish. Hold fast to belief in something better. Hold each other up. Hold on. Stand and hold on. Draw strength from our passions, our delights, our embrace of art and family and community. Take comfort in what we love, and commit to fight on behalf of what we love. Pray and work for a future better than today. One foot in front of the other.

How can one hold on to hope in hopeless times? I guess the best we can do is keep pushing forward. Music turned up louder than our doubts. Hands held or raised as we see fit. Eyes on...well, if not on the prize, at least on our next step in the direction of the prize. We may feel like we'll never arrive, and that fear may prove correct. 

But let go of that fear. There are so many reasons to lose heart, to lose focus, to lose our way in the darkness all around us. There are so many reasons to just give up. With "If We Could Let Go," Slyboots gently--firmly--urge us to let go of the darkness that surrounds us.

Let go of the hate. Let go of the hurt. If we could let go. Let go of the if. We can. We will. Slyboots make their case. Let's go, Slyboots.

THE RAMONES: I Believe In Miracles

It would be impossible to overstate the importance of music in my life. From listening to my Aunt Anna's Chubby Checker 45 in the early '60s through co-hosting a little mutant radio show six decades later, music has moved me, inspired me, and built me. With the possible (probable) exception of the Beatles, no musical act has had more pervasive and prevailing impact upon me than the American Beatles, the greatest American rock 'n' roll band of all time, the Ramones. And not even the Beatles can annex and fortify my sovereign POV to the sublime extent that the Ramones can. It's true in good times. It's equally true in times like these. Gabba Gabba, man. Gabba Gabba.

In times of trouble, when we find ourselves caught at the crossroads of moral quandary and indecision, we must always ask ourselves one question:

What would the Ramones do?

I doubt many people think of the Ramones as avatars of hope. Maybe they shouldn't...but maybe they should? If ever there was a band that persevered, endured, and just kept on doing, popular resistance be damned, it was the Ramones. They were a cult act. They became legitimate pop culture icons, through sheer force of will. A miracle, indeed.

The song "I Believe In Miracles" came late in the Ramones' career. 1989. It was a mere seven years before their final concert, a good fifteen years after the Bowery birthed them; thirteen years after their debut album, eleven years after their final Hot 100 single, nine years since the last Ramones album to (barely) breach the upper 50 in Billboard's LP chart. They had continued to make records. Sales--modest to begin with--diminished further. There were no miracles in their foreseeable future.

The determinedly uplifting lyrics of "I Believe In Miracles" were written by Dee Dee Ramone, and they offer a stunning affirmation of faith in the face of dismally long odds. The song was on Brain Drain, an album which also contained "Pet Sematary," the title tune from a then-new film based on Stephen King's novel of the same name. I even heard "Pet Sematary" on commercial radio once or twice--there's your miracle!--so maybe a belief in better fortune wasn't entirely groundless.

Just, y'know, mostly groundless. "Pet Sematary" did well (# 4) on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, but never troubled the Hot 100. Brain Drain peaked at # 122. It was the Ramones' final studio album for Sire Records. And it was Dee Dee's last record as a Ramone.

Dee Dee's abrupt departure from the brudderhood was startling, and his decision to jump ship seemed to stand in contrast to the resolute dedication implied by what he wrote in "I Believe In Miracles." Perhaps sometimes a song is just a song.

And perhaps sometimes--most times?--a song can be more than just...well, just anything. I used to be on an endless run, believed in miracles 'cause I'm one. Our art is a lifeline to our aspirations, a potential guidebook to what we want to be, what we could be. If reality falls short of our intentions, that failing doesn't negate the audacity to hope, nor indicate that we should deny ourselves the opportunity to rise: we have been blessed with the power to survive, after all these years of being alive.

One could have expected Dee Dee's exit, his act of packing up and taking his miracles home, to signal the Ramones' death knell. One woulda been wrong. A young bassist dubbed C. J. Ramone joined Joey, Johnny, and Marky in the final leather-clad incarnation of this Gabba-Gabba heyday. C. J. is in the video for "I Believe In Miracles." The Ramones kept on going. That's what the Ramones did, always. Their three post-Dee Dee studio albums in the '90s carried flashes of brilliance. And Dee Dee, bless 'im, continued to write songs for his former group. 

That wasn't a miracle. That was family. The few, the proud. Semper Fi.

Should we believe in miracles? Well, what would the Ramones do? It's a simple answer: 1-2-3-4. Get on with it. Hey-ho, let's GO! It doesn't always work out. But sometimes, every now and again, miracles are there for those who believe.

THE LEGAL MATTERS: The Message

It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how I keep from goin' under. Although the Legal Matters' new single "The Message" shares its title with a hip-hop classic by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, it is most assuredly its own message. As the group's Andy Reed explains, "In today’s political landscape, I’ve grown frustrated with the hypocritical, religious types. It’s not aimed at religion specifically, just those who weaponize it.” 

We get the message, and we approve. The single's out now; the new album Lost At Sea is due February 27th. Message received.

THE CLASH: Clampdown


The popular meme is correct: These are the times Joe Strummer trained us for. Let fury have the hour. Anger can be power.

MELANIE WITH THE EDWIN HAWKINS SINGERS: Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)

All around us, the world gives us an eternal supply of reasons to give in and give up. We counter the thud and drone with...well, with whatever we can, with any means or method capable of marshalling our spirits. Music is one of many such methods, a favored go-to when we need nurturing or inspiration, consolation or spark. In 1970, Melanie with the Edwin Hawkins Singers provided a song that still serves that purpose for me. From my book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1):

...What a terrific, uplifting song, with the sanctified might of the Edwin Hawkins Singers lifting Melanie up to soar as high as the angels above. I'd had no real use for the straight black Gospel sound of the Edwin Hawkins Singers' huge 1969 hit "Oh Happy Day" when I was nine, but "Lay Down" effortlessly mingled their celestial sound with Melanie's folk-singer vibe, and it all wound up as pop music. Irresistible pop music. Forget the damned roller skates. "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" is the key, right here.

"We were so close/There was no room/We bled inside each other's wounds." Well, the lyrics pin this one to the Viet Nam War era. "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" was inspired by Melanie's performance at Woodstock, a song written to express how it felt for her to see this massive crowd--perhaps not really a half a million strong, but giving the impression of a large, large number--as she sang and played her own songs of peace. The rain came down. You can hear her on the Woodstock Two album, performing "My Beautiful People" and "Birthday Of The Sun," dedicating her music with a giggle to the beautiful, wet people. You can hear her smile. You can hear her belief. 

After Woodstock, Melanie took all of what she'd seen, all of what she felt, and turned it into "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)." Raise the candles high. If you don't we could stay black against the night. The Edwin Hawkins Singers provide amazing grace, immortal soul, an oh-happy-day's journey into night. Raise them higher again. We could stay dry against the rain...."

THE JAM: In The City

In the city there's a thousand men in uniform/And I've heard they now have the right to kill a man

Those lines cut deep in 1977. They cut even deeper now.

APOLLO 100: Joy

Classic Top 40 is fine, but let's raise a glass to classical Top 40. In 1971, Apollo 100 took an electric pop-rock arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring" into the Top Ten and onto AM radios everywhere. "Joy." The song's title describes its effect. As we said on the radio Sunday night:

"We acknowledge that when things go wrong, playing pop music on the radio doesn't do much of anything to correct what's wrong. But we channel our outrage, our dedication, our belief that we CAN change, for the better. 

"Belief is hope. Hope is joy.

"On this show, and in this life, we embrace the audacity of joy."

THE BEATLES: Revolution

We do not know that it's gonna be all right. And it won't be all right any time soon enough. We ain't givin' up just yet. 1-2-3-4!

THE WEEKLINGS: All The Cash In The World

I'm prone to hyperbole anyway, so maybe you should ingest a li'l bit o' sodium when you hear me wonder out loud if the Weeklings' new album Raspberry Park just might be the group's best effort yet. But I tell ya: I'm starting to believe it is.

Exhibit A in that case is the Raspberry Park track "All The Cash In The World." As much as I've loved (and programmed!) the Weeklings' previous Pick Hits, "All The Cash In The World" carries some super-special intangible that elevates its pure sensory delight. "In The Moment,' from the Weeklings' 2020 album 3, has long been my go-to moment of Weeklingness. 

That moment now belongs to "All The Cash In The World."

MELANIE: Peace Will Come (According To Plan)

Our pal and colleague (and Radio Deer Camp host) Rich Firestone recently bemoaned the fact that we're forced to bid farewell to so many of our rockin' pop idols with such numbing, non-stop frequency. On this week's show, we say goodbye to Melanie Safka.

I wrote at length about my introduction to Melanie's music in a Greatest Record Ever Made! piece spotlighting "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)," Melanie's magnificent collaboration with the Edwin Hawkins Singers. As we remember Melanie, it was tempting to play that song yet again this week. But it felt more appropriate to play a Melanie song that we'd never played before.

"Peace Will Come (According To Plan)" opens with a quiet dignity that blossoms into full-body exuberance, an embrace of peace that will accept no substitute. It is the delicate grace and willful power of Melanie in microcosm. Peace will come. 

Melanie said so. 

Godspeed, Ms. Safka.

HUNGRYTOWN: Another Year

Have we ever played Hungrytown before? A check of the ol' stats says...nope, this was the first time. Man, it's a lucky thing for us that we have tenure. Now that Hungrytown's Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson have brought their unique folk vision to the ever-intrepid Big Stir Records label, maybe Dana and Carl can do a better job of getting Hungrytown into The Best Three Hours Of Radio On The Whole Friggin' Planet. It starts with "Another Year," Hungrytown's new single and Big Stir debut. Another year? We say it's another chance. We'll get it right this time.

THE SATISFACTORS: Arrested

Serendipity! When I fell in deep thrall to this track by the Satisfactors, I had no idea the ace lead vocals were supplied by none other than Kurt Reil of TIRnRR Fave Raves the Grip Weeds. HuzZAH!! Kurt was also the studio wizzard (spelling intentional, as it Wood be) who made our own 2022 compilation This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 5 sound so flippin' fantastic.

"Arrested" is also flippin' fantastic. The album is Dramatis Personae. This arrest merits further investigation. Just the facts: I'm on the case.

PAUL COLLINS: I'm The Only One For You

THE welcome earworm of 2024 so far. From power pop icon Paul Collins' forthcoming new album Stand Back And Take A Good Look, "I'm The Only One For You" finds Collins boppin' with righteous aplomb alongside the late Dwight Twilley, and the irresistible result fits right in among the best stuff Collins has ever done, including the Nerves, the Breakaways, and Paul Collins' Beat. I mean, the Beat's eponymous 1979 debut LP is one of the classics of power pop; "I'm The Only One For You" would have felt right at home on the record, mingling as a peer with your "Rock And Roll Girl" and your "Don't Wait Up For Me"" and your "Walking Out On Love." 

We debuted "I'm The Only One For You" on last week's TIRnRR. We played it again this week. And it returns to the air in Syracuse this coming Sunday night. DO wait up for this. And I can't wait to hear the album.

LEATHER CATSUIT: Can't Get You Off My Mind

Speaking of welcome earworms! Leather Catsuit's "Can Get You Off My Mind" comes equipped with a title that mirrors my opinion of the track: I can't get it off my mind. I don't wanna get it off my mind. It's pop music! I wanna hear it again and again. 

SUZI QUATRO: Paralysed

During back-announcements on this week's show, I joked that the set that opened with Leather Catsuit kicked off instead with Leather Tuscadero, mock-corrected myself, and then noted a couple of tracks later that we played Ms. Tuscadero herself, Suzi Quatro. And folks think we never plan stuff out in advance!

(They're usually right about that. But I digress.)

My original intent was to play Suzi Q's "I May Be Too Young," the first Suzi Quatro track I ever heard, and the subject of a chapter in my long-threatened book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1). But, as often happens when we're trying to shoehorn the show into its three-hour slot, we had to look at where we could sub in shorter selections. In that process, I switched my Quatro choice to "Paralysed," from her album Your Mama Won't Like Me.

Although I bought Your Mama Won't Like Me (at Record Revolution in Cleveland Heights, Ohio) when I was still a 1970s rock 'n' roll teen with a crush on Suzi Quatro, it's been established that I didn't really like this album all that much. The above-mentioned Rich Firestone has suggested Suzi should have called it Carl Won't Like This. I need to give it a fresh listen one of these days, just to see if I like it better now.

Even back then, though, "Paralysed" was the one track I did like. Still do. The stories you've heard are gonna be confirmed. Sing it, Suzi.

ROB MOSS AND SKIN-TIGHT SKIN: Hey You (We're Sick Of You)

"Hey You (We're Sick Of You)," the latest single from Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin, has the good sense, good taste, good breeding, and good rockin' tonight to enlist the aid of the Flashcubes' irresistible force of nature Paul Armstrong on Special Guest Bat-Villain guitar. Holy Search and Destroy! It's a match made in Boston. Probably at The Rat. It's loud. It's proud. It's skin-tight. And it's on the radio in Syracuse.

TAYLOR SWIFT: The Last Great American Dynasty

I'm told our next show has some heavy duty competition from a big football game on TV this Sunday. If the Buffalo Bills were playing, I'd even watch the game. But I would watch with the radio on.

But anyway, our congratulations to Taylor Swift. I've forgiven her boyfriend's team for ending the Bills' postseason this year--we'll get 'em next year!--and she is most definitely THE pop person of the moment. I don't listen to all of her work, but I admire her talent and her character. Plus she pisses off many of the same people who piss ME off. "The Last Great American Dynasty" (from her 2020 album folklore) is a truly wonderful track, and I think its Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac vibe is of a piece with whatever the hell it is we do here on This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio.

And regardless of whether or not the team Taylor's rooting for at the Super Bowl prevails or comes up short, one thing's for sure: She's still gonna be Taylor Swift.

5 ABOVE: Sick Day Edition

 5 Above picks five great things within a specific category. Look out below--these are five that rise above.

First off: I'M FINE! Honest. This isn't even my Sick Day. On this week's new episode of the Only Three Lads podcast, a scheduled guest had to concede Under-The-Weather status and cancel her O3L appearance at the last minute. This prompted the show's hosts Uncle Gregg and Brett Vargo to scrap their intended topic and pivot to an alternative: Top five tracks to listen to when you're sick.

Me? I suffer from chronic copycat syndrome. Ain't no cure. So I'm stealing this idea.

The first track to occur to me in this category was "You Sound Like You're Sick" by the Ramones. Upon further review, though, this didn't fit my idea of the concept: Songs you play to cheer yourself up when crusty 'n' contagious cooties bring ya down. We'll allow "You Sound Like You're Sick" the consolation chicken soup of airplay this coming Sunday night on This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio With Dana and Carl. For today's list, we're channeling the Partridge Family: Get HAPPY!

For today's 5 Above, we're sticking to the classic alternative era, which O3L defines as the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. But we'll step out of that era for a couple of...

...HONORABLE MENTIONS!

FREDDIE AND THE DREAMERS: Do The Freddie

The transcendence and triumph of the unapologetically goofy. Freddie and the Dreamers' 1965 novelty number "Do The Freddie" never fails to make me smile. My long-threatened book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1) is based on the notion that an infinite number of tracks can each be THE greatest record, as long as they take turns. "Do The Freddie" gets a turn. This should get lots of turns. It's the thing to do! Kids will envy you! Nothing can exorcise the yuckies quite like the Freddie can.

EYTAN MIRKY: This Year's Gonna Be Our Year

If Eytan Mirsky's 2012 track "This Year's Gonna Be Our Year" had been released in the O3L era, it woulda been a contender for # 1 on my list, and settled for a close # 2. What a great, GREAT song, absolutely one of my all-time favorites. It's snippy and stubborn, but simultaneously aspirational and full of...hopeless hope. Things probably aren't going to get better. But we're barrelin' ahead anyway. THIS year!

It just occurred to me that "This Year's Gonna Be Our Year" came out the same year I lost my dad. What a weird dovetail, but I guess it's also appropriate. There will never be a shortage of heartaches at hand. We will never run out of reasons why we should just give up. For today--maybe even for this year--we will hold those reasons at bay.

And yeah, of course "This Year's Gonna Be Our Year" has a chapter in my GREM! book. Duh.

TOP FIVE SICK DAY SONGS IN THE O3L ERA

5. BIG STAR: The Ballad Of El Goodo

Big Star was an after-the-fact discovery for me, initially introduced by the proxy of the Flashcubes' live cover of "September Gurls" in 1978, with exposure to the original records to follow in later years. "September Gurls" was the first track I ever referred to as The Greatest Record Ever Made (though Badfinger's "Baby Blue" was the first GREM! piece I wrote). And my "September Gurls" chapter also mentions the resilience and determination of Big Star's "The Ballad Of El Goodo:"

"A teenaged hitmaker with the Box Tops, a cult-pop legend with Big Star, and a fiercely (and frustratingly) independent solo artist, Alex Chilton was dismissive of his own legacy. But he was a brilliant songwriter, responsible in whole or in part for a handful of what I believe to be among the most affecting, beautiful pop songs ever done. With his Big Star partner Chris Bell, Chilton co-wrote 'The Ballad Of El Goodo,' the single most transcendent expression of triumphant hope that I am ever likely to hear...."

4. THE KINKS: Better Things

At my dad's funeral in 2012, my eulogy concluded with the lyrics from "Days" by the Kinks. It's such a moving, evocative, appreciative song, and I think you can understand why I don't often listen to it anymore. 

Within the O3L era, "Better Things" (from the Kinks' 1981 album Give The People What They Want) is less stiffer-upper-lip and more Partridgesque c-mon-get-happy. And it will serve. I hope tomorrow we all find better things.

(The Kinks are represented in GREM! by a celebration of "Waterloo Sunset," with "You Really Got Me" held in reserve for an even-more-theoretical Greatest Record Ever Made! Volume 2).

3. MELANIE WITH THE EDWIN HAWKINS SINGERS: Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)

I'm not sure to what extent (if any) the recent passing of Melanie Safka elevated this lovely track on my list for today, but I tell ya, I have always, always adored "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)." Yes, it gets a GREM! chapter. We can stay dry against the rain.

2. KISS: Shout It Out Loud

Awright, if we're gonna wedge a KISS track into our Sick Day 5 Above, it probably oughta be "Calling Dr. Love." The first step of the cure is...KISS!!

But I'm going with "Shout It Out Loud," as infectious a party tune as anything ever. Perhaps you don't wanna deal with "infectious" when you're sickly. Screw that. Rock 'n' roll is good for what ails ya. Don't let them tell you that there's too much noise. Dr. Love prescribes a SHOUT!

Oh! Almost forgot: The Greatest Record Ever Made! KISS: Shout It Out Loud

1. THE RAMONES: Blitzkrieg Bop

The soundtracks of our everyday days and nights are vast and varied, with individual components set in their places by a divine artistic director that knows what He, She, or They are doing. When a mishap with my car forced me to postpone a long-planned and much-needed road trip originally set for the next morning, I blasted the entirety of Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols to channel my anger and frustration. Decades ago, when a college girl I fancied went out with another guy, I sat on the floor of my dorm room, swilling beer and listening to Paul McCartney warble that he believed in yesterday. 

There are songs for all occasions. The right tune can comfort, console, lift, motivate. It can offer catharsis or escape, band aid or blunt instrument, challenge or confirmation. A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together. 

Also dancing. Evidence suggests the right song can inspire dancing.

The music of the Ramones has been a vital part of my existence ever since a November afternoon in 1978, when "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" became the record that changed my life. "Sheena" gets a chapter in GREM!, as does "Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio?" "I Don't Want To Grow Up" wound up in my other book, published last year. If there's ever a GREM! Volume 2, it will include "Blitzkrieg Bop."

"Blitzkrieg Bop" is the definitive Ramones song. Hey-ho, let's go! It's a compact realization of the group's essence, the purity of their transcendent rockin' pop righteousness, the sheer inevitability of Ramonesified oomph. Take it! It's good, AND it's good for you!

It's certainly been good for me. We're all revved up and ready to go.

10 SONGS: 12/29/2022

10 Songs is a weekly list of ten songs that happen to be on my mind at the moment. The lists are usually dominated by songs played on the previous Sunday night's edition of This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl. The idea was inspired by Don Valentine of the essential blog I Don't Hear A Single.

THE BEACH BOYS: Our Prayer

When I was teenaged college student and early twenty-something college graduate in the late '70s and early '80s, I wasn't much of a Beach Boys fan. That opinion evolved, in large part due to the influence of Bill Yerger, owner of Main Street Records in my college town of Brockport, NY. "Carl," Bill said, "we're gonna make a Beach Boys fan out of you yet." It took a while, and it didn't really click until a few years later, but I don't know how or when it would have happened without the positive influence of Bill and his wife Carol Yerger. I was so lucky to know them.

I was seventeen when I went off to college at Brockport in August of '77. Endless Summer was the sum total of my Beach Boys music library, and all I was ever likely to need (missing only "Good Vibrations" from what I would have thought a complete collection of essential Beach Boys tracks). I did add Pet Sounds to the ol' CC archives before the end of my freshman year, purchased from Bill when he was managing The Record Grove, a year before he opened his own store.

I remained in Brockport for a couple of years after graduating in 1980. That's when the Yergers began to work on me. applying their own set of good vibrations. A pair of two-fer double-LP sets from Main Street's used bin brought Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, Friends, and 20/20 into my collection. That was the first time I heard "Our Prayer."

It would be inaccurate to say my introduction to "Our Prayer" was some immediate revelation; as noted, it wasn't until years later that I realized my folly in delaying my full-on embrace of Hawthorne's Finest. When we settled on the theme for this week's special show, I knew we had to call it OUR PRAYER, and that we needed to open the show with the Beach Boys. 

Our prayer is for love, for hope, and for the ability to hold on. Our prayer is for friends, and our prayer is for music. Sometimes, our prayer is answered. Thank you, Bill and Carol. 

THE RASCALS: People Got To Be Free

I had the good fortune to see the Rascals at a club show sometime around the close of the '80s. It was 3/4 of the original Rascals line-up, with Felix Cavaliere, Gene Cornish, and Dino Danelli present and accounted for, missing only Eddie Brigati. All four Rascals eventually played a show at Syracuse's Landmark Theater in this bright 'n' shiny new millennium, but another commitment prevented me from attending. I wished I coulda made it, but it wasn't in the cards.

Dino Danelli passed away two weeks ago. He was an extraordinarily talented drummer; even though the Rascals are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I'm not sure the group gets all the credit they deserve, and I don't think Danelli's name comes up often enough in discussions of the great rock 'n' roll drummers.

Some time back, I started writing a celebration of the Rascals' (or the Young Rascals') "Good Lovin'" for my long-threatened book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1). I never completed the entry, and it's not part of the book's current plan, but its opening paragraph is worth noting here:

"Little Steven says garage rock is 'white kids trying to play black rhythm and blues and failing--gloriously.' Fair enough. So what do we call it when a white group tries to play soul music, and succeeds? We could call that the Young Rascals."

What a great, great group. Rest in peace, Dino.

If you're gonna bill a radio show as OUR PRAYER: Love, Hope, And Holding On, you had best give Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin her due chance to testify. Doesn't even matter if her testimony in this case happens to secular; a prayer's a prayer, man.

MARYKATE O'NEIL: I'm Ready For My Luck To Turn Around

In this sublime gem that opens Marykate O'Neil's 2006 album 1-800-Bankruptcy, O'Neil and co-writer Jill Sobule declare readiness for luck to finally turn around. At some point in our lives, we all relate to that wish. Here's a bit of what I wrote about the song for The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1);

"...I'm ready for my luck to turn around.

"I used to say that I was made out of hope. Maybe I still am. Marykate O'Neil's wonderful track was one of my most beloved security blankets in 2020, first as I attempted to calibrate my own frustrations and expectations, and then more gravely as the year became...that year. I don't think O'Neil designed the song to be a comfort for anyone. That's just how it turned out. Ultimately, even the artist's own goals fall away as the audience adopts the work as its own. 

"I'm ready for my luck to turn around. As this world continues to give us more and more reason to question what we think we know, to lose faith in what we believe to be unshakeable truth, it's a sentiment worth adopting as both shield and sword. Stand by me. 

"If you're ready."

GREAT BUILDINGS: Hold On To Something

RIYLs can help us find new favorites. But they can also create a false and unfair expectation. In 1981, I read somewhere (possibly in CREEM, maybe in Trouser Press) that Great Buildings were like a male counterpart to the Go-Go's. I believe it was meant as a compliment, and since Beauty And The Beat was my top album that year, the comparison provided sufficient push for me to purchase Great Buildings' Apart From The Crowd LP before I had ever heard a note of the group's music.

And I was disappointed. It didn't sound anything at all like the Go-Go's. I filed it away.

I came back to it, though. Freed of the misconception that it would sound like boys singin' original tunes that channeled "We Got The Beat," I grew to appreciate the LP on its own sterling merit. Opening track "Hold On To Something" freaking knocked me out, once I gave it its proper opportunity. 

Great Buildings' Danny Wilde and Ian Ainsworth had been in the Quick, whose quirky 1976 cover of the Beatles' "It Won't Be Long" got some airplay on Utica's WOUR-FM when I was in high school. After Great Buildings closed up shop, Wilde went solo, and eventually reconnected with Great Buildings guitarist Phil Solem to form the Rembrandts. The Rembrandts scored a Top 20 hit with "Just The Way It Is, Baby," and achieved pop culture immortality with "I'll Be There For You," the theme from Friends. Maybe you're sick of that song--dig what you dig--but it was the number one song on the radio the week my daughter was born, and I will always, always cherish that memory.

Comparing Great Buildings to the Go-Go's was a fake-out, and the disparity between what was teased and what was delivered turned me off. Initially. But without that PSYCH! moment, would I have even gotten around to hearing Great Buildings at the time? No harm, no foul. The apparent dead end of that RIYL still led me to "Hold On To Something," a magnificent track that has now been in my all-time Hot 200 for four decades. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Baby, baby, baby, hold on.

POPDUDES: Share The Land

Going into the planning session for this week's show, our list of potential tracks included three songs associated with the Guess Who: the group's own fabulous rendition of "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature," the Halfcubes' ace (but currently unreleased) cover of "Hand Me Down World," and this capable take on "Share The Land," courtesy of Popdudes. The Popdudes track made it into the show, and it comes to us from the terrific various-artists set We All Shine On: Celebrating The Music Of 1970. We All Shine On scored some significantTIRnRR airplay this year--we'll hear one of its other tracks in our countdown show this Sunday--and "Share The Land" is certainly among the album's many highlights.

THE RAMONES: Do You Wanna Dance

A new year looms. I'm going to be mentioning the Ramones a lot in 2023. Wanna dance? I sure hope so.

The original plan was to close the main portion of OUR PRAYER with the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again," setting up Eytan Mirsky's incredible "This Year's Gonna Be Our Year" as our post-signoff bonus track. We wound up running way, way over time, so we hadda remodel the plan a bit. Some songs came out, some songs came in, and a few tracks were moved around. All in the service of building a better playlist.

Bruce Springsteen's "Girls In Their Summer Clothes" was going to occupy this week's Greatest Record Ever Made! spot (because it is, after all, The Greatest Record Ever Made!). Figuring the paradox of fragile durability expressed in "Girls In Their Summer Clothes" provided an appropriate note to conclude our theme, we moved Melanie into the GREM! slot and switched Bruce into the finale. Bruce, in turn, set up Eytan for the encore.

(And yeah, Eytan Mirsky's "This Year's Gonna Be Our Year" is also The Greatest Record Ever Made! An infinite number, my friends, as long as they take turns.)
