Our compilation CD This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 4 was released one year ago this week. There's a limit to how much credit Dana and I can grab for a collection of tracks contributed by other people, but we nonetheless take great personal pride in the result. I can say with conviction and sincerity that TIRnRR # 4 is at least the equal of any rockin' pop compilation ever done by anybody. I mean that. It is more than just hype when I suggest that if you have even the merest interest in high-energy pop-fueled rock 'n' roll, bred equally on classic AM Top 40 and left-of-the-dial FM, then This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 4 should be an essential purchase for you. What? You want opinions from someone other than one of the guys who slapped it together? Why, I oughtta...! Fine. Goldmine's John Borack said that TIRnRR # 4 is "positively crawling with great tunes from accomplished titans of the power pop genre;" the esteemed Mr. Borack later picked it as his compilation of the year for 2017, and included three of its tracks in his list of the year's Top 40 songs. Alan Haber's Pure Pop Radio noted that "compilations with this much oomph should be shoo-ins for your collection." We accumulated a passel o' thumbs-up reviews from Bill Kopp's Musoscribe, Richard Rossi's Power Pop News, Aaron Kupferberg's Power Popaholic, Strange Things Are Happening/Thee Psychedelicatessen, and Rock 'n' Roll Truth. Someone out there must have hated it, I guess, but wisely chose to keep his/her/its opinion private. If you like The Rubinoos, The Smithereens, The Grip Weeds, Paul Collins' Beat, The Flashcubes, Chris von Sneidern, Ray Paul, and/or Circe Link And Christian Nesmith, well sakes alive, they're all here on This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 4. They're joined by even more pop splendor from Pop Co-Op, Vegas With Randolph Featuring Lannie Flowers, The Slapbacks, P. Hux, Irene Peña, Michael Oliver & the Sacred Band, Stepford Knives (with Jamie Hoover), Popdudes, Ronnie Dark, The Bottle Kids, 1.4.5., The Hit Squad, The Legal Matters, Maura & the Bright Lights (with members of The Kennedys, Screen Test, and The Records), Lisa Mychols, and Mr. Encrypto & the Cyphers, plus The Rulers declaring "I Want My Ramones Records Back." Single disc. 29 tracks. All great.
In the twelve months that have passed since the release of TIRnRR # 4, our radio show This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl has evolved from a weekly internet-only show to a simultaneous berth on terrestrial radio: still Sunday nights, 9 to Midnight Eastern on sparksyracuse.org, and also on the new Spark WSPJ-LP 103.3 and 93.7 FM in Syracuse. TIRnRR will hit the twenty-year mark in late December. We've found a few new listeners along the way, and we remain convinced that this is The Best Three Hours Of Radio On The Whole Friggin' Planet. Maybe we're deluded. But maybe we're right. And maybe--just maybe--you'd enjoy experiencing the presumed splendor of TIRnRR yourself. This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 4 is a pretty good place to start.
