Some blog pieces exist for no greater reason than because I felt like having fun with something. As I perform revisions on the completed draft of my long-threatened book The Greatest Record Ever Made! (Volume 1), it occurs to me that I want to make note of a few of the many, many artists that don't get their own chapters in GREM!, but do make cameo appearances. Each of the acts listed below scores at least a passing mention in the book, from how the Routers inspired the Ramones and that time Patti Smith pissed off fans of Helen Reddy through actor Leslie Odom, Jr. channeling Sam Cooke, and more.
Some references are more substantive than others, some are...well, not. But they're all here, at least in the current draft. The cameos below are arranged to correspond with the relevant chapter in GREM! The entries in italics are placed for chapters that don't contain cameos by any non-GREM! artist; rather than leave those spaces blank, I've listed an artist who is mentioned in some other part of the book.
The work on the book continues. The first pass of editing and revising is a little less than a third done, but progressing well. Here's a little glimpse of some acts name-checked therein.
