Over the course of 1149 This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio playlists, this week is only the second time we've had an opportunity to play new music from the Cowsills. The previous opportunity was in 2019, when the group's version of "Won't You Be My Neighbor" (from a Mister Rogers tribute album called Thank You, Mister Rogers) appeared in This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio # 998. Our all-time most-played Cowsills track is "She Said To Me," a simply superb number from the Cowsills' 1990s album Global. Global predates the debut of TIRnRR, but many of our listeners first heard "She Said To Me" on our show; it remains a TIRnRR classic, and the group allowed us to use it on our 2006 compilation album This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 2. The Cowsills were our Featured Performers on TIRnRR # 980 in the summer of 2019.
So, yeah: we're Cowsills fans. And we're beyond thrilled to have new Cowsills music to play. Their new album is Rhythm Of The World; at this writing, I've only heard the title track, which was released as a single in advance of the album's September 30th street date (in time to program into this week's show). It's wonderful, and I have no doubt that the rest of the album will be equally sublime and superb. By the time you read this, I should have my copy of Rhythm Of The World and already be digging it the most ut.
[POSTSCRIPT: correct prediction. Rhythm Of The World is stunningly good.]
We're fans. Our enthusiasm as fans of rockin' pop music is why Dana and I continue to do this weekly radio shindig. It's why we continue to mix brand new releases with varied treats from across a span of decades, old and new, recent and classic mingling in comfort and style.
And it's why we keep on slappin' together fresh compilations, too. Of course. This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 5 is shipping this week, and it's available to order right here. This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Volume 5 presents a stellar collection of tracks by Laurie Biagini, the Mayflowers, Perilous, Pop Co-Op, Maura and the Bright Lights, Hoover and Martinez, Carolyne Mas, Deadlights, Irene Peña, Chris von Sneidern, Arielle Eden, Stevenson and Company, Justine and the Unclean, the Jangle Band, Kid Gulliver, Gary Frenay, Kelley Ryan, Tall Poppy Syndrome, In Deed, Ballzy Tomorrow, the Villas, Amy Rigby, and Eytan Mirsky. It is yet another manifestation of what all of this means--what it will always mean--to Dana and I. We're fans. Fandom is its own reward. And it deserves a soundtrack.
NEXT WEEK: THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO # 1150! We...have nothing planned. But it'll be great! Trust us; we're DJs. And if you can't trust DJs, well, I hope you can trust a couple of fans. This is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
