SPOILER ALERT: No Christmas music this week. We're going to have a little bit of Christmas music on next week's show.
Probably not much Christmas music. We have the Grip Weeds' wonderful and recently reissued holiday album Under The Influence Of Christmas in hand, and one of its tracks will almost certainly appear in our December 10 playlist. Later this month, we'll be proud 'n' pleased to present The 25th Annual THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO Christmas Show, date TBD. We will have the brightest Christmas, good fortune willing.
But not just yet.
As the calendar hits its final page, we wanted to pause and celebrate a different season: Summer In December. Counterprogramming the holidays with a collection of summer songs and songs that make us think of summer. Surf. Sun. The beach. Vacation. Bring 'em.
It's not quite an exercise in denial (though it borders on same). Earlier this week, when Dana and I hammered out this playlist, Syracuse was under our first lake effect snow warning of the imminent winter season. The evening commute was, as my daughter said, "not fun." I think you can dig why we might wanna postpone that specific tsuris.
But for all that, I feel an eensy bit more open to Christmas than I usually do at this early point. On Black Friday, my wife and I put up our Christmas tree. We didn't put the tree up at all last year, and I don't think we did the year before either. There was just too much...too much going on. But now? I've added the lights to the tree, and our daughter came over to apply the decorations.
We're still not turning the lights on, mind you, but we're getting there.
The season will come. I'm not ready to play or hear Christmas music at this moment. That moment is coming. It comes but once a year.
We hope for the merriest. We wish you the merriest. For this week, though?
Surf's up.
