POP-A-LOOZA: 45s Are GO! The Monkees, "For Pete's Sake"/"You Just May Be The One"

Each week, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza shares some posts from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. The latest shared post is about a 45 that never was, a hypothetical 1967 single of the Monkees' "For Pete's Sake"/"You Just May Be The One."

This piece was originally the inaugural (and thus far only) entry in a series called 45s Are GO!, which would have imagined additional 7" vinyl releases that should have been, but, y'know, weren't. If I never get around to writing another 45s Are GO!, I could do worse than having the combination of these two great Monkees tracks as the concept's sole representation.

Both songs were written or co-written by members of the Monkees: "For Pete's Sake" is credited to Peter Tork and Joey Richards, and "You Just May Be The One" is by Michael Nesmith. Each is among my top 25 Monkees tracks, and yeah, they shoulda been a single. As we mourn Nesmith's passing last week, as we remember the previously-departed Peter Tork and Davy Jones, and as we wish someone would hurry up and insulate last surviving Monkee Micky Dolenz in protective wrap, we continue to play the music that made us fans.

Our little mutant radio show This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio with Dana & Carl will attempt a proper tribute to Michael Nesmith's legacy when we return to regular programming in January. A couple of songs created by Michael, Peter, Davy, and Micky (with producer Chip Douglas) serve today as the subject of the latest Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.
