Each week, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza shares some posts from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. The latest shared post is my look back to the 1970s, when I first encountered the Charlton Comics superhero called E-Man.
E-Man was created by writer Nicola Cuti and artist Joe Staton. Cuti passed away earlier this year, and he is one of the six posthumous recipients of the 2020 Bill Finger Awards, honoring comic book writers whose work hasn't received its just due. The award is named for Bill Finger, the originally uncredited co-creator of Batman. You can read more about the 2020 Bill Finger Awards at Mark Evanier's essential News From ME, the blog that in large part inspired the modus operandi of Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do).
My E-Man recollection was originally published in 2016 as part of The Everlasting First, my A-Z series of reminiscences about my first encounters with various musical acts and fictional characters; the series has been on the back burner for a while now, but should return eventually--no, honest!--with T is for TARZAN and T is for THE TROGGS. Eventually. It's been almost a year since S is for THE SHADOW, longer than that since S IS FOR THE SEX PISTOLS, so yeah, I'm overdue to get back to that series.
The Everlasting First also told the tale of my introduction to Charlton Comics, and Charlton played a role in my Everlasting First piece about Flash Gordon. Charlton was also a frequent resource for comics stories in my 100-Page FAKES!, a series of imaginary 1970s DC 100-Page Super Spectaculars. Hell, four of these FAKES! cover-featured Charlton works, with my faux expansions of The Phantom # 67, The Six Million Dollar Man # 1, The Phantom # 68, and the never-published E-Man # 11. I still occasionally include Charlton material in some of my current monthly Spectacular Comics 100-Page Specials. Alas, there's no Charlton stuff in the next issue of Spectacular Comics, which should post next week with classic adventures of The Spectre, The Green Hornet, Captain America and Golden Girl, Wonder Woman, and Zorro.
But today, we honor Nicola Cuti and Joe Staton, Alec Tronn and Nova Kane, and Michael Mauser, P.I. The Everlasting First: E-Man is the latest Boppin' Pop-A-Looza.
