Each week, the pop culture website Pop-A-Looza shares a post from my vast 'n' captivating Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) archives. This week's shared post is from my series The Other Side Of The Hit (B-Side Appreciation), celebrating "Kiss Kiss Kiss" by Yoko Ono.
I haven't written much about Yoko Ono, but I gave her a role as a behind-the-scenes hero in my fantasy about a 1976 Beatles reunion concert, and she and John Lennon had supporting parts in A Brighter Light In My Mind, my flight of fancy about a world where my favorite power pop group The Flashcubes hit it big. I made a straight pitch for recognizing the positive effect Yoko had on John in a piece called "Yoko Ono For Christmas." A John Lennon appreciation I wrote for John Borack's 2010 book Life Is What Happens served as my second blog post ever on January 19th, 2016, back when I was still billing this as CC Says rather than Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do).
The Beatles have turned up a time or two at Boppin'. We're not going to attempt links to all of those pieces here, but for starters we have Greatest Record Ever Made! proclamations about "Rain" and "Hey Jude," pieces about underrating The Beatles, The Beatles copying The Dave Clark Five, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The White Album, whether or not Beatles VI is my all-time favorite album, my 25 favorite Beatles tracks, a hypothetical album collecting the best covers recorded by The Beatles, and an overall reminiscence of what my all-time favorite songs would have been if someone asked me to name them at various times when I was 16 to 22 years old, lists that most certainly include The Beatles. That's just a sampling of my Beatles writing at Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do).
In addition to "Kiss Kiss Kiss," that B-Side Appreciation series The Other Side Of The Hit has examined "Surfing And Spying" by The Go-Go's, "The Girl I Knew Somewhere" by The Monkees, "Take It Or Leave It" by The Barbarians, and "Babysitter" by The Ramones. I have a number of other B-Side Apprections to follow...someday!
For today, we celebrate Yoko Ono and "Kiss Kiss Kiss," this week's Boppin' Pop-A-Looza. We love you Yoko, oh yes we do.
